Marching Band

Marching Band - General Informational

Survey

With enrollment completed, students will be surveyed to see whether they intend to be in band next year or not. These numbers are used to finalize show design details, costs per student for the show, as well as general planning for all logistical purposes. The survey will take place in late March, after spring break.

Registration

Registration is done in two parts - online regsitration and physical registration. Both must be completed in order for a student to be registered and eligible to participate in band.

Online Registration involves filling necessary paperwork and ordering necessary items. The window to register online, which is usually about 2 weeks prior to physical registration, will be in late April/early may. Instructions and complete information will be available on the Jenks Band Parent Website. Make sure to read ALL instructions to properly register for the upcoming marching season.

Physical Registration involves getting fitted for certain parts of uniform/apparel, paying fees, and signing up to volunteer for various needs of the band program. Physical Registration is set for Saturday, May 15th. A schedule and details will be added as the event nears.

Mandatory Registration Fees for 2020 will be approximately $900.00 with approximately $250 in additional/optional fees. The exact amount for each student can be determined after completing the online registration. Payment is expected and needed on the day of physical registration. Financial obligations for the school year 2020-2021 will need to be taken care of by this time. Any student with a negative balance will be placed on hold in the office and will not be allowed to participate in any manner until their account is in good standing.

Physicals

Over the last decade, marching band has not only become more contemporary in nature, but much more physically demanding. OSSAA is considering requiring students in marching band to complete a physical each year before being eligible to participate. The OSSAA board is meeting and voting on the issue in April. If the vote passes, more information will be added at that time.

Uniform Fittings

Uniform Fitting for incoming Juniors and Seniors will take place on the same day as Physical Registration - Saturday, May 15th. Uniform Fitting for Sophomores will be on Saturday, July 24th and Uniform Fitting for Freshman will be on Saturday, July 31st. A Fitting Schedule for all students and a work schedule for student leaders will be added HERE as the event nears.

Instrument Checkout

School owned marching band instruments will be checked out to students in May before school is out. If a student has not been issued an instrument by this time, those instruments will be available for pick up at physical registration. It will be necessary for students to have their instruments over the summer in order to practice, prepare, and memorize their music.

Summer and Pre-Band Rehearsal Schedule

General Dates for the summer and fall are available on the Website Calendar. Specific times and locations will be added to the High School drop down menu in late June and early July.

Percussion Camp is set to start on July19th. A Rehearsal Schedule will be added as the event nears.

Pre-Band is set to begin on Monday, July 26th. A Rehearsal Schedule will be added as the event nears.

Color Guard practices will take place through out the summer. A rehearsal schedule will be given to guard members after auditions have been completed.

Marching Contest Show

Information regarding the Marching Show are shared/revealed in May - usually before school is out and after the spring concerts. Most years, at least some of the music is available and rehearsed in class before summer begins.

Stand Tunes

Stand tunes have not been finalized yet. A list and links to hear each tune will be added after stand tunes have been selected.

Music and Memory Tests

Music memory tests over full band warm-ups, the fight song, the star spangled banner, the alma mater, and Oklahoma!, as well as contest music will begin during pre-band rehearsals in late July. Specific days and times will be announced at the beginning of pre-band. Students need to make sure and have this material learned and memorized correctly for the first day of rehearsal. Music memory tests will continue throughout the semester on the show music used for contests and the parade music used near the holiday season.

Marching Contests

At this time, Jenks has not officially entered any Fall BOA events this year. While things are slowly returning to normal and the number of COVID cases are in decline, the band staff and school administration does not feel comfortable traveling overnight or out of state for any length of time. There is too great a risk of significant financial loss for both the individual and the band program as a whole. When quaratine and contact tracing policies are no longer in place, the marching band will consider returning to these presitigious events.

Jenks does plan on competing at local and state level marching contests this fall. We are looking forward to getting back into the normal rehearsal routine, producing a complete show with music, electronics, choreography, and props that will be performed both at home football games and competitions.

Marching contests are all day events. This year, all the contest (except OSSAA Regional Marching Contest) are on Saturdays. Contest days usually include a light rehearsal in the morning, loading and departure to contest site, as well as prelim and finals performances. Check website calendar for spedific dates. Students are expected to be at everything listed on the itinerary and should not plan to do anything else on those days.

Informational Packet

Each year, information is given to 8th grade students to better prepare them for high school band. This information is available for review for any HS student/parent that wants to see all the information again. It should be noted that no adjustments have been made to this packet since the COVID-19 pandemic began. It will continue to be a general reference to what is normally done. Any changes or adjustments to information for the 2021 marching season will not be reflected in this packet.  High School Band Informational Packet

Marching Band School Rehearsal Schedule

Below is the regular rehearsal schedule for marching band during the fall semester.

In general, the Track is available every morning at the indicated times below. The stadium is not available on Monday but is the remainder of the week. Most of the time, the band rehearses together, but there is the potential to have rehearsals at two different facilities at the same time on selected days. Information is shared with students, written on the board prior to rehearsal, or posted on the website as time allows.

Mondays – 7:45-9:45 (brass, woodwinds, battery, and guard at the track. Front ensemble in band room or by the concession stand). 4:30-7:30pm Guard sectionals at the track/PEG.

Tuesdays – Fridays 7:45-9:45 (Main rehearsal at stadium. A group or groups may also rehearse at the track depending on what needs to be done for that day. Students should check the board in the band room each morning for specific instructions).

Evening Rehearsals are usually on Tuesday or Thursday nights from 6:00-8:30 PM at stadium. On Fridays when the game is away, the band also has evening rehearsals at the stadium. Dates are indicated on the website calender and reminders will be sent each week via eNewletter.

Post Marching Season

Once the final contest is finished, the Trojan Pride will be transitioning into concert, honor band, and solo & ensemble seasons.

Concert Band Auditions will take place in mid-October or the same week of NCDA Auditions. Auditions will be done via recording individual auditions both during school and after school. An audition schedule will be added in late September. We divide into three concert bands after results are posted and begin preparing for the Kiwanis Christmas Parade and Holiday Concerts.

Spring Trips

There is a possibility that the bands could take a trip in the Spring of 2022. The Jenks Band staff and administration will continue to monitor the conditons throughout the summer and fall. It circumstances are favorable, planning and information about a trip in the spring would be made available in the fall.
