8th Grade Students - Prop Assistance Needed

Dear 8th grade band student and parent,

The high school band is in need of assistance with the 2011 marching band show “The Gates.” Included in the show are twenty-three large props. We need twenty-three or twenty-four students who are willing to help in this area. Students would be responsible for operating the props during the show as well as helping an adult move the props on and off the field for performances and contests.  Prop operation involves changing the colors of the attached fabric via a pulley system and is a critical part of the show this year as it directly affects the visual impacts at several different times throughout the show.

Time commitment would involve rehearsals with the high school band every Thursday evening for approximately 90 minutes, Friday night football games, marching band contests, and one overnight trip to St. Louis. A list with specific dates and times is included with this letter.

Cost per students is $120, which is about a third of the cost for high school band members. Cost includes a uniform to be worn at contests, all meals, charter bus, and hotel expenses. For trips, all 8th grade students would be on the same bus. For the overnight trip, students will not be sharing rooms with high school band members, only other 8th grade students. This type of project qualifies for community service hours through several organizations.

Students may sign up for this next week. The sign up sheet will be posted on Miss Arnold’s office window.  A final list of students accepted will be posted at the middle school band room and on the website in approximately a week. At that time, sizes for the various parts of the uniform will be taken and ordered and students will begin rehearsing with the high school band.

Questions should be directed to Scott Hillock via email –

Thank you for your consideration on this project.
