Schedule/Calendar Change

From March 3rd to April 4th, the school day is going to be extended 30 minutes so that school is over at 3:00. In an effort to continue to prepare for concert band contests and comply the new school schedule, brass and woodwind sectionals will be delayed 15 minutes. Sectionals will now be from 3:15 PM - 4:45 PM until we return to the normal school day times.

MESSAGE from Superintendent Stacey Butterfield (posted on JPS website and Facebook Page)

In an effort to maximize instructional time and make up weather days, district administration proposed adding 30 minutes to the end of the school day from March 3, 2014, until April 4, 2014. The longer school days will occur during a critical period for students, a time in which they will be preparing for OCCT and End-of-Instruction tests which occur throughout the month of April. The added minutes will allow the District to make up two (2) missed days and to increase the amount of test preparation time available for students. While weather days were built into the 2013-2014 school calendar, we were looking at students possibly attending school in June. Hearing concerns from multiple stakeholders, the recommendation was made to maximize the learning opportunities prior to testing and attempt to end school in May. A proposal was presented for consideration to accomplish this goal using a combination of minutes and days to make up our weather days. The Jenks Board of Education approved this proposal at the Board meeting last night.

Additionally, the Administration and Board of Education made the decision to close school and participate in the Oklahoma Education Coalition Rally at the Oklahoma Capitol on Monday, March 31, 2014. In light of the challenges we continue to face with school funding, excessive testing, and teacher shortages to name a few, we believe having a presence at the Capitol is critical. When we consider the fact we are still receiving $259 LESS per student today than we did during the 2008-2009 school year, we must be a voice for our students, their futures, and the future of Oklahoma.

These calendar changes make the last day of school for students Thursday, May 29, 2014. While we understand one plan will not meet the desires of everyone impacted by this change, we sincerely hope these details help explain the recommendations and decisions made with the overall best interests of our students in mind.
